The level of control available over Optical Character Recognition (OCR), recognition areas, tables and document structure is far superior to several other major OCR products I have used previously. Being able to review and adjust how a page is recognised before export is particularly useful, especially when working with more complex technical documents, tables and scanned material. The Advanced Conversion tools give the user considerably more control over the final result than many competing products. > > **Inconvénients**: Unfortunately, there are several issues with the Mac version that make the product more frustrating than it should be. I have experienced problems when saving or exporting directly to certain folder locations. ABBYY's own support documentation also identifies situations where the selected file path or folder naming can cause export problems on the Mac. Abbyy Support More significantly, when using the table modification tools, exporting can fail with the FENExportPageOperation error. ABBYY has confirmed that this is a known issue which can occur after adding or changing separators within recognised table areas. Their suggested workaround is essentially to avoid manually modifying the table separators, which rather defeats the purpose of having these excellent table correction tools when automatic recognition has not produced the required result. Abbyy Support ABBYY Support — FineReader PDF for Mac: FENExportPageOperation export error Another weakness is the limited diagnostic information provided when an export fails. There is often little useful guidance identifying exactly what has caused the failure or which page, table or recognition element needs correcting. This can result in considerable time being spent troubleshooting by trial and error. The PDF export options could also be explained much better. ABBYY provides technical descriptions of options such as Text and pictures only, Text over the page image, Text under the page image, image quality and MRC compression, but I think these would be much more useful if accompanied by real-world examples showing what the user should expect from the resulting document. Abbyy Help ABBYY Help — Options for exporting to a searchable PDF For example: Which settings should I use if I want the scanned page to look virtually identical to the original but remain searchable? Which settings are best for minimum file size? Which are best if the recognised text is going to be reused or edited? Practical examples like these would make the export options considerably easier to understand. > > FineReader has some genuinely excellent features and, particularly in terms of OCR control and document recognition, has the potential to be an outstanding product for Mac users. My experience is therefore mixed. The core recognition functionality and the amount of user control are very good, and in some respects superior to other major products I have used. However, reliability issues with saving and exporting — particularly the documented table-editing/export problem — together with limited diagnostic information when something goes wrong, detract considerably from the overall experience. What is particularly disappointing is that some of these issues are already known and documented. I would like to see ABBYY address them in a timely manner rather than relying on workarounds that effectively require users not to use some of the product's most useful advanced features.
