Too many pros to list here but this box is requiring more characters . . . it doesn't integrate with any other tools, the website design options are incredibly limited, outdated and stale looking.

StarChapter for Non-Profit Organizations

Commentaires : Starchapter has saved our organization a lot of money by reducing the subscriptions we had into one program. Setting up the website was easy to do with the SC support team, there were a few add-ons that we didn't anticipate that cost a little bit more, but we still saved hundreds by switching to StarChapter. Our organization is super excited to enhance our online presence with our members and sponsors through StarChapter!

Avantages :

StarChapter combines a lot of separate programs we previously used into one easy to access program. It manages email forwarders, displays sponsors logos on our website, and automatically updates based off of when the sponsor has paid through. StarChapter also allows us to setup email templates that are automatically sent to new or lapsed members which eliminates the need for our membership chair to constantly have to remember to check our rosters and compare them month to month.

Inconvénients :

The administration side of the website turned out to be a little more challenging than we originally expected. Some of the functions and website design aren't as intuitive as we would have liked and has required additional training for the less tech savvy members on our board.

Good Choice for Non Profits

Commentaires : Overall it has been good. The price was fair at setup, though the yearly fees have gone up already. Customer service is pretty helpful. There is still room for growth for them and I hope they will add features in the future.

Avantages :

The staff was very helpful migrating our old website to StarChapter. We use them for events, event registrations and membership in addition to our general website. The customer service usually responds with help in a day or two.

Inconvénients :

There are some things we wish it would do. It would be nice to have a schedule manager for our events. It would also be helpful if there was an easier way to include free membership in our registration for an event. The newsletter is adequate by not fantastic and I wish there was a way to email beyond our members/non members list occasionally. Some basic functionality, like sub-sub menu items would be helpful.

I regret this purchase so far

Commentaires : I am not happy. Customer service always finds reasons why the problem is about me, instead of about their non-user-friendly platform.

Avantages :

It's attractive for the users. When you can get the features to work it has a polished looks. Content added in the admin menu is automatically added to the website.

Inconvénients :

Where do I start? I have a long list of complaints about this platform. If it were more user-friendly it would be great. Unfortunately it is not user-friendly or intuitive. I have used other systems that required much less customer service requests on my part. I would not call myself a tech expert but I do tend to navigate technology with mild to little difficulty, including editing my own website and some light coding, so I am not a complete novice. I am constantly having to go back and rewatch support videos or fiddle with the system because its just not intuitive. If and when i do figure out something that should be simple, the features are pretty nice, but the platform is so frustrating that I have not found the transition worth my while and I regret it.

Great bang for your buck

Commentaires : Solid experience with their team and product. The service help desk is very responsive.

Avantages :

Effective, easy to use, efficient tool. Can't do EVERYTHING, but you depending on what's valuable, you can make excellent use of the tools included. All in one spot. Vs. 6 different logins, 6 different tools, etc. Membership, website management, event registration, email marketing - simple.

Inconvénients :

We haven't found things that are glaringly bad. Having a student member component was not something we've solved long term. We'd love to have a student member category so students can sign up at a student rate, and right now we can't do that. It has to be done manually.

Avantages :

StarChapter is an easy and effective event management system. Entering meeting details is a breeze and downloading related reports. We also utilize StarChapter for membership management and website updates.

Inconvénients :

The backend for website management is a bit more complex that WordPress but having it integrated into one software is a nice touch.

Avantages :

They easy elements of communications, setting up events and sign-up of membership.

Inconvénients :

It is difficult to see what type of membership is for each person and how much they paid and what they paid. There is no integration for webinars! Adding contacts is also limited and makes it difficult to email all potential leads. Also you should have an app that allows easy QR checkins for attendees. What about a program attached to your meeting that issues certificates that can be easily emailed to the participant.

StarChapter keeps our local Chapter organized

Commentaires : We love the support ticket response team. They are always available and answering questions thoroughly!

Avantages :

As a non-profit organization with new board members every two years, StarChapter has proven to be vital in keeping us organized and providing a location for documents so that we are not exchanging a large box of documents every time the board changes. It is all in one place - our applications for membership, member lists, old documents, scheduling meetings and events, sending email blasts, and even collecting payments.

Inconvénients :

The cost for our small non-profit just went up in 2024 and we are not happy about that because there wasn't any added features provided with this added cost.

Easy to Use

Avantages :

Easy to use, works well with payment processers, integrates well with APICS Corporate to pull in member information in a timely manner

Inconvénients :

The Lite version has limited functionality. Help documents do not apply as they are written for other non-Lite versions. Spend way too much time trying to find some parts for updating the site.

Commentaires : The tech support is great. The pricing leaves something to be desired and they need to offer more training.

Avantages :

The interface is professional and very user friendly

Inconvénients :

The meeting setup needs a copy function. Also, the pricing went up astronomically after we were assured it would not.

Commentaires : Overall StarChapter has been a tremendous help with our association management. It has made my job so much easier. The system is easy to manage and maintain. Our members are happy with being able to make payments easier.

Avantages :

StarChapter set up our website with our assistance, gave us minimal training, and responds quickly to any questions I might have. They provide help to my questions about adding to, deleting, and changing the website. StarChapter is my first experience with managing a website and has been a very easy to learn and maintain.

Inconvénients :

There are certain parts of our paperwork processes that have been a bit difficult to get used to on a website. But the StarChapter allows you to create support tickets to get assistance on adding or changing information. If the website does not allow certain additions, then the support area sends our suggestions to their management.

Commentaires : Have had a number of issues, looking at changing to something else that is more user friendly.

Avantages :

multi user capable. Everything handled in "one place"

Inconvénients :

difficult to maintain web pages. have to edit multiple places to update a page. Switched from accepting PayPal to their own credit card processing application. Does not accept any "foreign" card (any card from outside the US, this mean even Canada. We have a number of Canadian based members who can't be processed. Fees are high than PayPal. Can not accept (swipe or chip) cards onsite, have to manually key them in.

Love the ease of ease and the professional facing website and features. Star Chapter customer service is wonderful to work with.

I honestly do not have any. Wonderful software for the price. Has paid for itself in removing the tedious administrative tasks as well as the human error mistakes.

Room for improvement, but outstanding product & service

Commentaires : The ACFE has 188 chapters world wide. I'm the Vice President of the San Diego Chapter and a member of our National Leadership Council of 12. I'm asked routinely throughout the US about StarChapter and sing your praises for the outstanding job you do. In hindsight, I'm hoping StarChapter does get the opportunity to begin showing signs of growth and maturity in their website platform and processes. I'm saying this from a truly humble place myself as I've just taken our own local chapter from 26 members (7 of which were board members) to now over 100 by biting the bullet and making the changes necessary to move us forward.

Avantages :

Although there's much room for improvement in certain functionalities, StarChapter provides an outstanding product & service and their tech support staff has always been extremely professional and well versed in all things website maintenance.

Inconvénients :

1) Somehow your organization needs to find the budget for true novice to intermediate tech support to handle incoming calls, assisting with the rudimentary or emergency items. Currently, Customer Service Agents solely manning the phones to either set up Tech Support Tickets or redirect customers to go online followed by a 24 – 48 hour wait time for an initial response. By the time the client receives their email answer or online chat meeting, it could be 3-6 business days later in total. Remember, your client’s bottom line is priority #1. If there’s a problem with either of the following (to name a few), you’ve just caused your client unnecessary setback and frustration: • A problem with their payment gateway connection. • A problem with their membership or event registration processing correctly • A problem with email blasts going out correctly 2) Update your website portal to include proper “how to” instructions. I'm sure you feel you’ve already done so but 80-90% of the time, this is not the case for those clients that are self-doers. 3) For 3 years I’ve been working with StarChapter and must have suggested at least a dozen good suggestions for your website engineers to create/fix and still have not seen the changes produced. I’ve even offered to pay out of pocket for these changes and yet still no further action is available.

StarChapter as a Platform

Commentaires : It’s 100 times better than the Wordpress platform we used previously, especially with regard to the membership piece. The four pieces of advice I would give are that:

1) it will make your life a lot easier if you have a central person who will be mostly responsible for knowing how to use the platform and doing most of the work on it.
2) If you are switching from an existing membership platform to StarChapter, anticipate that there will be bumps. Not horrible, but it will take a decent amount of time once it launches to get your membership acclimated to the new system and make sure the information is correct. Not everything will transfer over exactly the way you thought it would. Emails will need to be verified before anyone will be able to receive what you are sending. There is some hand holding of the membership during this stage.
3) Take time to get your members and non-members verified so that people are actually receiving your emails.
4) If you can, have a payment portal as part of your StarChapter system.

Avantages :

There is a learning curve to get familiar with the program, but once you do, it is pretty straightforward and relatively user friendly. It is nice to be able to use one platform for the website, events, and email communications.

Inconvénients :

Creating the events and communications can be frustrating from a formatting perspective if you aren’t used to it – but that is the same in most platforms. And also like most platforms, there are some quirks that you end up just working around to get it to do what you want. It’s hard to keep the bookkeeping 100% accurate, so I wouldn’t utilize StarChapter’s reporting as your only source of financials.

Review of StarChapter

Commentaires : This has really brought our organization to a one-stop shop. We had files everywhere, and when people would drop off the board, sometimes we lost information. This allows us to keep it in one place and make the transfer easier for the Chapter.

Avantages :

It's a total package for our membership organization. It allows one program that can be easily transferred to the new board each year. No need to have separate files.

Inconvénients :

Some of the areas for managing the website are not easy to find, but once you have done it a few times, it starts to get easier. It would be nice to see what the regular member sees when adding items.It's hard to get everyone on the board together to train. Individual training is fine, but it is more beneficial together.It would be nice to have a calendar that members could pull up by month and see the upcoming events. And allow us to add events to the calendar that aren't specific to our chapter but interest our members.

A great value

Commentaires : The customer service/tech support department is great. They are responsive and problem solvers. One of the great features of this software.

Avantages :

I like the newsletter feature the most. I can create digital newsletters by template.

Inconvénients :

The cons for the software are that it doesn't fit with how our association works. The software is more designed for "chapters" of associations as opposed to a single association. We have COMPANIES as members (we are a 506(c)(6) trade association), and staff of those member companies are also considered members. So the billing/invoicing feature doesn't work for us, nor does the online registration for the most part. I also don't use the mass email feature because we leave it up to our members to create their own accounts, and there are thousands of individuals who might do this. It is easier for me to use Constant Contact for an email database and I have a link on our website's home page that allows people to add themselves quickly to Constant Contact. I also use CC for online registrations. I use QuickBooks for all invoicing and for our membership database. The software witih StarChapter simply doesn't work in the direction I need for our type of association.

Easy to use, great customer service

Commentaires : We have been using StarChapter for 3 years, and I have been the technology director for all of that time. StarChapter is a life-saver. It makes it fast and easy to upload/create content, post new meetings, email our community, manage members and non-members, etc. We used to have to use a combination of an HTML site, Eventbrite, PayPal, and Mailchimp to do what StarChapter can do all by itself. It definitely provides more value to the board and to our members and community.

Avantages :

The majority of the software makes it very easy to manage our chapter's website, from meetings and payments to board transitions and communication. StarChapter provides ample live and pre-recorded instructional videos, as well as an extensive "knowledge base" of articles. When I can't find what I need, or when there is a problem, I can submit a support ticket. I always get a response in under 24 hours, usually less than 12.

Inconvénients :

If you want to create complicated web pages (more complex than the template pages that are provided), you need to know a bit more about website design. It's not as user friendly for those who aren't tech savvy. Also, sometimes the editing/formatting features can be a bit frustrating, like using tables and things for page design.

Commentaires : We are able to market our events with ease and efficiently. It solved the issue of mass emails. Membership is easier to track and to communicate with those members. I like StarChapter; it's fees are spot-on and I have recommended it to other associations.

Avantages :

Top items: 1) Ease of access from any location. 2) Ability to have most of the associations information in one spot 3) Email communication 4) Reports available. Love the graphs for membership, meeting attendance, etc... 5) Love that the members can download the meetings they attended to track their own CEH credits. 6) Love how the support team gets back promptly on issues. 7) The newsletter StarChapter sends out although finding time to read it gets in the way. 8) The ease of using it. It's not hard to train others to use it.

Inconvénients :

Least liked: 1) Email verification. 2) The difficulty to find where to change some information and the need to ask what page it is on. 3) Renewing a members dues from administrative point of view has been difficult. 4) Would like notification of any issues concerning members. 5) Screen size for creating an event. Would like it bigger.

Commentaires : There are some features of the software that are excellent. I really like the email communication interface. Our biggest concern is that there is very little ability to customize to your association needs. Customization of the site is not an option and work around options are complicated, confusing & time consuming for the board. Communication between the front and admin end can be mismatched. If you are ok with small things like application field names not matching profile field names and back end names, but being similar it's fine. If you are ok with having drop down menus on your application, but not on your individual profile editors, which results in somewhat of a mismatch of information, you will be fine. For our Association, it's all small things that you will encounter with the software, scrolling down pages of data, the overall display of profile editors, etc... that will make things difficult for the board and for membership. It's very important to understand that these items can't be changed even with a work order and in our eyes this is a major limitation of Capterra. Overall, the system functions, but it isn't the easiest software to manage and it will take a MAJOR commitment on the part of the associations board to make this system work as best as it can for your association. If your Association is small and doesn't need much in the way of tracking and display, CME, spreadsheet export, and more, Capterra will be a good solution. I will say compared to a fully customized website development it is more economical for all involved, despite the commitment it requires.

Avantages :

The email communicating system.

Inconvénients :

The mismatch of options on the front end, individual profile end, and admin end of the site. The inability to set standard views for daily use (defaults for individual members) The complicated way the profile editor is displayed. The inability to have custom drop downs made (similar to the State drop-down) for large comprehensive lists - these need to be on both the front end - application and member profile editor as well as the admin member manager area.

A big step up from hosting your own website

Commentaires : StarChapter is relatively easy to learn if you already have some background in web development. But the layperson may need more support in order to accomplish their goals with the site. We hired a web developer to work with StarChapter's team and set up our website in order to give the site a little more polish. StarChapter's training videos are very helpful in getting started on the site, and I highly recommend watching them.

Avantages :

StarChapter makes it very easy to track registration and payments for our monthly meetings. Our previous process was for attendees to email one specific person, and all payments were handled on-site at the meeting. We were able to reduce the time commitment for our Registration chair significantly by switching to StarChapter, and we've been able to open up pre-payment for meetings through online credit card payments. This helps to ensure more turnout, since people are more likely to show up when they've already paid. It is also much easier to enable multiple people to work on the site, and those people don't need a background in web development to do important tasks that keep the Chapter running, like posting new meetings and newsletters, and keeping our calendar updated.

Inconvénients :

My least favorite part of the platform is the text editor, which isn't terribly surprising. If you want to include more than simple text for an event or mailing, you are better off creating the content outside StarChapter and importing an image or attaching a PDF with your content. I think this is a pretty typical complaint with text editors, but it would streamline our processes if we could do everything in one place.

Extremely difficult to use, but also cost effective

Commentaires : It is an incredibly frustrating site to use (and I have developed sites myself) but if you want an integrated database (again difficult to use), credit card processor and website at low cost, StarChapter fits the bill.

Avantages :

You cannot beat the cost- we choose it because it is inexpensive and if you are trying to save money StarChapter will help you with that.

Inconvénients :

It is very difficult to use. Everything requires multiple non-intuitive steps. It is almost impossible to get the site to look the way you want. It is supposed to be WYSIWYG- but is not. The leading is always off and you never get what you expect when making changes. I have had professional developers and designers try to help make the site look the way I want, but even they have thrown up their hands in disgust.

Good but challenging

Commentaires : As a non-profit organization we don't have a lot of money to spend. StarChapter knows how organizations (like ours) operate and caters to our needs. They do a great job of creating a straightforward user interface with with modest functionality. The CMS is pretty easy to understand and navigate on the back-end. My issues are that the editing process can be confusing. If you have custom templates built they may be completely inaccessible as .php files maintained on the corporate level. This means that it can be a challenge to change the look and feel of many pages without placing a service request. And then you need a back-and-forth exchange before the desired result is understood and realized. That said, the StarChapter team are very responsive and try to be very accommodating in their responses to questions and requests. They also check on open tickets several times before asking if the ticket can be closed. So even if YOU forget that you wanted information and that you needed to follow-up regarding a task, they will remind you by asking if you still need help. StarChapter has a lot to offer but there may be limited flexibility and if, like us, you have a volunteer staff with limited resources and annual turnover of the controls... it can be really hard for someone else to take over the site management. There's a modest learning curve and so it might be a challenging transition. It would be ideal for organizations with stable staff, consistent staff engagement, and a development budget.

Commentaires : I think starchapter is mostly userfriendly and organized in an intuititve way, on a high level. Doing certain basic tasks seem to have far too many steps, though. Like adding a single member requires going though 7-8 different screens.

Avantages :

we can manage events, communication, member database and website all from one platform

Inconvénients :

the communications tools are limited and the membership functions don't allow for much flexibility with memberships that have multiple people listed. The system forces you to enter a per person dues rate. So a 3 person membership that costs $100 actually costs $33.33 in their system, which when multiplied by three doesn't result in a round number. Members can't upgrade and downgrade as they see fit as well, they have to get in touch with staff.

Commentaires : As I said, we are a volunteer driven educational organization. StarChapter assists our organization with managing activities and members, which are our core competencies.

Avantages :

StarChapter is easy to implement and use. Their support team is excellent and very responsive. Most of the applications are easy use.

Inconvénients :

We are a volunteer driven educational organization. We teach classes in person and virtual. Students are able to retain continuing education points for attending our events. StarChapter lightly touches on, but does not manage well, our member's tracking of educational points.
