Nothing Beats Scrivener for Writers

5,0 l’année dernière

Avantages :

Scrivener is endlessly flexible, fitting any way you can think of to help you write the best prose you possibly can and print it in just about any way you may need, including producing files suitable for publication in online bookstores such as Amazon. The complexity does, however, make the program intimidating to beginning users. It helps if a user makes a conscious decision to learn and use only the bare bones at first, but it can be difficult to figure out what bare bones to use and where they are. It helps a lot, though, that Googling Scrivener along with a function of the program will produce dozens of how-to articles. After all, Scrivener is designed for writers, and a good number of them write about Scrivener!

Inconvénients :

I reluctantly admit that I haven't yet talked myself into tackling the learning curve on printing out anything but the simplest of documents from Scrivener. I'm sure it was worth it to many writers in the past who needed to produce publication-ready manuscripts, but these days Vellum is available for the Mac and Atticus can be bought for either Apple or Windows computers. Both are much easier to use.

Easy-to-use book maker

Commentaires : Scrivener is a great tool for writers who want to output novels, short stories, screenplays, or a number of other various forms without having to do all the legwork from scratch inside Microsoft Word, Pages, Notepad, or Unix (okay, it's highly unlikely that any non-masochistic writer would use those last two to write -- but hey, you never know). Simple right clicks add folders (which become chapters when you compile) or texts inside those folders. Then you click on your text item, change your text style if you don't want the default, and start pounding those keys. Don't bother numbering the chapters -- you may want to rearrange them, and doing so involves simply dragging them around the hierarchy. Each text item you create comes with a synopsis section and a notes section, both of which are completely optional. If you don't fill out the synopsis, the first sentence of the passage shows up in the corkboard view. There's also a research folder where you can keep even more notes, which don't get counted towards your total word count. Spell checking is easy, exporting segments to various popular formats is easy, and compiling the whole project is easy...once you figure out how to select the whole project by clicking on the root folder. Unfortunately, my version has a quirk where any new text item forces everything I type onto one line until I close and reopen my entire project -- after which all my carriage returns show up and everything looks great. Scrivener streamlines the writing process a great deal, and is a must-have for any budding novelist. Don't leave home without it (if you're going to the coffee shop to write).

Avantages :

-Very easy to create chapters and reorder them -Very easy to see summaries and notes from the corkboard -Can apply custom templates (for example, Game Design Document templates) -Simple, if slightly confusing, to compile into an orderly Microsoft Word manuscript

Inconvénients :

-Slightly buggy -Chapter styles don't stick as easily as I'd like -Compiling process isn't entirely intuitive

Don't Believe the Hype: Scrivener is Awful and You Will Hate it - Avoid It and You Will Thank Me!

1,0 il y a 4 mois

Commentaires : There are no functions for increasing or decreasing indent unless you want to go back to using the tab key constantly and if you do this in a list? Fugitaboutit. Scrivener 3 will remove the line from your list altogether as it assumes you didn't there anyway. It is awful software. Try to set the margins on Scrivener like you would on ANY free or paid word processing software. Go ahead, I'll wait...can't figure it out? That's because you can't do it. Scrivener 3 will set your margins as it sees fit and you will like it. Yes, the YouTube ladies will tell you that you can but good luck getting Scrivener to consistently set them and leave them. You'll be fighting page setup constantly with this software. How about leading on the text or "line spacing" as many word processors call it? Can't do that either. The whole document defaults to this weird 1.5 line spacing which is nearly impossible to change and keep changed. You'll be fighting line spacing for your entire document. This is an absolute travesty of an experience, Scrivener is trying to be smart about all the ridiculous carnival features it thinks you would actually use and in reality, none of its developers have ever tried to write a long form project using their own software...that is obvious. I could go on and on about the failure to process inserts like tables and pics and how these are a nightmare to format in your work or how you can't just add page breaks in a given paperback format or how you have to "complie"

Avantages :

Project management allows you to break down the document into various sections which act as separate files. This is great for project management or storyboarding but an absolute nightmare for writing a long form document like a book or thesis paper.

Inconvénients :

I have used this software for a couple months now and I absolutely hate it and for good reason. You cannot format text like you can in a free word processor like Open Office or in paid software like Word. They like to say you can but I'm here to tell you that you can't. Forget formatting lists in this garbageware. Scrivener 3 will format it as it sees fit and you will like it and just for fun, Scrivener will format it completely different under the exact same settings the next time you want a list. The format font is courier or Times and good luck trying to change that. Oh, you can change it alright, but it won't matter as every new line you type will be in the Scriver 3 font - not the one that that rest of the document OR in the defaults settings which you changed originally. No, Scrivener 3 will type in the font it chooses - either Courier or Times and you will like it. Fake reviews and YouTube videos tell you to set up your styles in the "styles" pallet but good luck getting Scrivener to actually set the style consistently in the style you saved in the palette. Ultimately, you will be fighting formatting constantly.

Scrivener is the gold standard of writing software

5,0 il y a 2 mois

Commentaires : I've been using Scrivener for years. I like that it's flexible in that I can use the features that I find helpful and not worry about ones I don't need.

Avantages :

Scrivener is as easy or complicated to use as you want it to be. You can get started quickly, then learn more about it's more advanced features as you need them.

Inconvénients :

About the only thing I don't like about it is that it's rather dull visually. For some people, however, this might be a plus, as it isn't distracting when you're writing.

I'm beyond impressed!

5,0 il y a 2 ans

Commentaires : Scrivener is my go-to app for writing my novels and screenplays. It allows me to organize all of my work in one place, and with the ability to save different drafts, I never have to worry about losing anything. With Scrivener, I can easily find the information I need. The interface is intuitive and easy to understand, and it is always available on all of my devices.

Avantages :

The organisational capabilities of both writing and research are invaluable. And the compile feature, once you get it set up, is astonishingly powerful and, with a bit of work, as good as Vellum.

Inconvénients :

It can take a while to learn Scrivener's unique features, but if you take the time, you'll find there's a lot more going on than you see at first. If there's one thing that bugs me is that the compile functions in Scrivener 3 are difficult compared to version 2.

Productivity and focus booster

5,0 l’année dernière

Avantages :

Scrivener is without a doubt one of the richest app function-wise on the. market. It is actually so powerful and rich that most of its functions require extensive research. It is so powerful that if you are thinking of a function you need, Scrivener will most probably have it – you just need to look for it.

Inconvénients :

What I don't like about it is mostly related to the abundance and wealth of options it offers. The learning curve is really a long one and it requires research and finding out in order to really discover every single option there is.

Doing research with Scrivener

5,0 il y a 4 ans

Commentaires : I am using it for collecting information for my research and writing drafts. It helps me to be better organised. However, its licensing terms and compatibility issues between Mac and Windows version are off-putting.

Avantages :

I do like many things in Scrivener. Even though it is meant mainly for writers, it has so many features and I am not using all of them. For me, it is usually the tool that I am often coming back to when I want to start some new research, collect information, store excerpts from secondary literature and write drafts. And it does it very well! I love especially the split view for documents and how easy it is to create new subdocuments and folders and move everything around. I love it. Also, it is great that one can add various icons to folders and documents. I also like a very generous trial version which allows you to use it for 30 non-consecutive days of use!

Inconvénients :

Firstly, it would be great if there would be just one personal license that I could use both on Mac and Windows. I bought the version 2 for Mac but I am still hesitating to put money into the Windows version. The reason is that it would not be just one-time purchase but I would have to do a similar thing with every major update (they are, however, rare). Another issue for users of multiple platforms is that Mac version 3 is currently not compatible with the stable Windows version 1, only with the beta version 3 for Windows (there is no version 2 for Windows). And the beta version 3 is still not perfect and I experienced multiple (although smaller) issues with it. I perfectly understand that the team of Scrivener programmers is extremely small and that they are doing an unbelievable amount of work, however, this is still an issue for me and the waiting for the Windows version 3 is just long. There is iOS version but now Android version. (And yeas, Linux version would be also nice but it is probably essential.) Finally, there are a couple of minor complaints: - Handling of images could be much improved, especially their resizing is cumbersome. - Better integration of Scapple would be great. - Better compatibility between Windows and Mac version (hopefully it will be done with the final version of the Windows app) The main reason why I am not using Scrivener all the time is, in the end, its license and the lack of better mind mapping functions (like Scapple).

If You're a Writer and You Don't Have Scrivener, Why?

5,0 il y a 3 ans

Commentaires : Scrivener is one of those unicorn programs that's too hard to learn, even harder to master, and somehow still manages to be impossible to live without, even when programs with more specialized abilities come along and TRY to oust it. It's the kind of program that reminds you why you wish you'd become a dentist instead of a writer. Incredibly useful and occasionally frustrating and the one program no writer should be without (especially if they love a challenge).

Avantages :

Scrivener has many jobs, but it also has one job: Give the writer a central place for all of his project's components. Need a place to outline? Organize ideas? Store research? Write the draft? Label your nutty ideas? Comment on your nutty ideas? Export everything into a manuscript without corrupting it with nutty ideas? Track your word count? Customize your needs? Scrivener does it all. And it does for one low price. It also integrates well with the writing workflow, regardless of whether the writer uses Scrivener for everything or just some things. I personally find it useful for organizing the scenes I've already written, just in case it turns out I've forgotten something important along the way. Scrivener makes documenting the success and failure of a scene easy.

Inconvénients :

My complaint is probably the same as any one else's complaint: It has more features than I know what to do with. The cost of the courses designed to teach users how to use the software are often FAR more expensive than the software itself, and without those courses, it's hard to figure out how to use it effectively. Exporting to manuscript is not at all intuitive, even when you know what you're doing. It's probably more effective to write and plan within Scrivener, then copy/paste to another program for exporting. It doesn't have any visualization features. Sometimes graphs speak louder than synopses.

Scrivener is one of the best programs for writers

5,0 il y a 11 mois

Commentaires : Excellent.

Avantages :

It is a program with multiple functionalities and options that is designed to be used according to the needs that we writers have. Once you start using it, you realize that Word is much worse in this regard. It allows you to organize the books by chapters and scenes, in addition to showing organization cards. Another feature that I love is that it allows you to keep track of daily writing goals. It also allows you to save previous versions and go back to them if necessary. Another of my favorite options, and one that I discovered not so long ago, is the possibility for the program to mark the different versions by color. Thus, when you are with a new version, you can see what you have added. Furthermore, you can always remove this and see the typical black text again. By the way, this option is only for viewing, and not for printing. It is very useful.

Inconvénients :

There are few failures or drawbacks that I see in this program. One may be the learning curve to learn to do everything you can do with it. I recommend watching some basic video tutorials and start using it as soon as possible. As you use it more, then it's good to learn new features. Another possible disadvantage that I see to the program is that, at least in Spanish, the spell checker is quite basic. Furthermore, it doesn't have a thesaurus to use as you type. This is the only feature that World is better at.

Scrivener Was Made for Writers by Writers

5,0 il y a 3 ans

Commentaires : Scrivener is great for writing, not just novels, but non-fiction, blogs, social media posts etc, etc.
If you join a Scrivener group on Facebook, there are lots of people who will freely help for any problems, as well as the L&L website.

Avantages :

Scrivener has so many features, you will never get around to using them all. Dip in and use what you need to start with and when your Scrivener skills increase, you will use more features. It's the ability to organize work and let it flow around within a binder structure that makes writing so easy. You can write in small chunks and re-arrange it into the order you desire later. There is the facility to create synopsis, save research to Scrivener, create notes and lots more. Flags and progress can be attached to areas that you are working on to keep track of progress. Scrivener also syncs with ProWritingAid and Aeon Timeline, as well as Scrivener's sister product Scapple

Inconvénients :

There is a learning curve to Scrivener which can put some people off. The best practice is to download the trial version, which gives you 30 actual days of use. Then, read the Literature & Latte manual and watch the video before opening the program to get an overview of how it works. Then create a dummy project to learn from. Get used to the compile feature early, rather than waiting until the end of a piece of work.

Scrivener: For the Pros

5,0 il y a 4 ans

Commentaires : Scrivener is one of the few pieces of software that I can give a perfect score. 10/10.

Avantages :

Scrivener is a word processor that provides templates for different mediums, including fiction, nonfiction, screenplays, and more. It can be used to write novels (which is my primary interest), essays, letters, HTML—essentially anything that requires words on the page, all without the actual page. What makes it distinct from other word processors is the ability to write pieces in any order and move them around with ease. You can also incorporate research from another site or source, and keep it available in the background until you need it. There's a project-management aspect of Scrivener that I haven't used much, but it's nice to have the option available. Overall, it's an excellent piece of software that I use often.

Inconvénients :

It's a very minor complaint, but I would love to have a build for Linux, so I can write on my practice computer. There was one a while back, but it is no longer available.

A must-have for serious writers

5,0 il y a 2 ans

Commentaires : As someone who transitioned to Scrivener from another writing software, this one is superior. I used to get caught up in all the extra features other software had, like mapping relationships, filling out character profiles, etc., which was really just my way of procrastinating, honestly. With Scrivener, I can eliminate any categories I don't use, and the simple design keeps me focused. In addition, the one-time fee makes it absolutely worth the switch. Most software charge annual or even monthly fees at the same cost.

Avantages :

Scrivener gives you the ability to organize your work, check statistics, and sync with the mobile app to work on the go. I love the variety of views you can select from, whether you're reorganizing the order of scenes and chapters or wishing to view your manuscript as one uninterrupted file. It can appear as simple and distraction-free or technical as you wish.

Inconvénients :

It can take a bit of time to learn how to use it to its full potential, but there are plenty of tutorials online and help features.

Scrivener for writing

5,0 il y a 4 ans

Commentaires : I love that this software has only a one time cost and is not a subscription. And, after installing, they continue to push updates and features. I installed on my desktop, laptop, and iphone quickly and easily - and within a short time was editing my Scrivener projects on all three.

Avantages :

I like most just how well this software allows you to organize different aspects of your writing (note cards, text, character sheets, places/location descriptions, etc). Once you use all of these elements that go into writing a book, you can re-organize them on the fly, export to any format you need, etc. I especially love how easy it is to save your Scrivener projects to dropbox (and even synchronize to dropbox when using the Scrivener version for iPhone). It makes it easy to work on writing on any of my devices wherever I am.

Inconvénients :

So far I haven't found anything that I don't like about this software, only that I didn't find it sooner! If I had to identify a weak point, it would be that the interface wasn't immediately intuitive to me. Rather, I had to go through an included tutorial to learn how to use the program. But, when you consider the scope of functionality that this program provides, it makes sense that you might need to spend a bit of time learning how to use it.

Indispensable for Writers

5,0 il y a 5 ans

Avantages :

There are several things that make it very useful for anyone writing: 1. There's a very good search feature that makes it easy to find a word or phrase throughout the document 2. It keeps track of daily and overall word counts, which is a metric most writers use for goals. 3. It has a great corkboard feature that allows you to setup each section and visually rearrange them to see how the project flows. 4. It has an active forum with great support.

Inconvénients :

Due to its power, Scrivener has a fairly steep learning curve. I think the most difficult/confusing is in compiling the document, either to export it to Word or to create an electronic book (ebook). There are several settings that control how the document is compiled, and settings within settings, which create a myriad of choices. Even after watching the tutorials I was confused. The good news is that, for the most part, compile wors well using the default settings. You'll just have to expect to tweak the final product a little.

A Program With A Place To Put Every Writing Idea

5,0 il y a 5 ans

Commentaires : Scrivener has increased my writing productivity, and the speed with which I am able to edit and integrate materials. I've also been using it for designing non-fictions books and online learning materials. I recommend it to my coaching students for developing their own manuscripts because it makes their writing journey so much easier, especially if they are visual learners and communicators.

Avantages :

After using Word to write my books and longer articles I became frustrated with the lack of flexibility for moving text around easily. Scrivener has been a game changer for me. The ability to move between layouts, to tag my work for easy referral, to seamlessly drop and drag chapters into a new order, and to have a binder to store rough chapters, research, character notes has made writing fun again. I especially love the synopsis view which can be used like a corkboard. I also like being able to create sections for writing which I haven't found a place for yet within my manuscript, and for saving edited-out pieces that I may come back to later.

Inconvénients :

It took a while to get used to thinking differently, and to familiarising myself with the functions but there are handy videos and tutorials to helpo with that.

Great writing tool...with a bit of a learning curve

5,0 il y a 5 ans

Commentaires : Scrivener has helped me write short stories to offer for free without having to hire a formatter. And now that I have a greater understanding, I'll get more out of it. I may even buy a mac to get Scrivener 3.0 (I currently use the only windows version available).

Avantages :

I love that Scrivener will allow me to compile my ebooks into epub, mobi, and pdf files that look great. It's easy to maneuver and find issues throughout a large document. And Scrivener helps keep your writing and notes organized.

Inconvénients :

The toughest part about Scrivener is the learning curve. I used only part of Scrivener for a long time and knew I wasn't using it to it's full potential. And figuring out how to get the compiled files to look write took some finagling. I finally broke down a took a class and I'm so glad I did.

My favorite for writing fiction!

5,0 l’année dernière

Commentaires : At first, I found Scrivener intimidating. Watching YouTube videos about Scrivener for Beginners was very helpful. I also printed out some cheat-sheets to keep on my desk for quick reference. But once I figured out the basic functions that I needed for what I'm doing, I was off and running. There's still a LOT of features I have never played with, but it's nice to know they're there if the need should ever arise. But I'm still looking for a character specific timeline feature. I've heard it's in there somewhere, in some form. But I have yet to locate it.

Avantages :

I like that the creators of Scrivener have tried to anticipate the needs of a wide variety of users to make the software as useful as possible. I especially appreciate the versatility of the Compile function.

Inconvénients :

The learning curve is HUGE if you want to use all of its features, and it isn't always intuitive.

The only way to write a book

5,0 il y a 4 ans

Avantages :

Scrivener makes organising my writing work an absolute breeze. The use of folders and documents for all aspects of writing gives ultimate flexibility in bringing together all the ideas contained in a novel or research paper. Separate folders hold research work and character profiles etc.

Scrivener Saves the Day!

5,0 il y a 2 ans

Commentaires : Scrivener is great for writing drafts and getting ideas out onto virtual paper, so to speak. There are virtual index cards which allow you to play around with the order of things, and that's a huge deal when working on large projects.

Avantages :

I just wrote an online course using Scrivener. I loved that I can easily break the course into sections, and each section has its own file in the binder. When I write, I like to jot down ideas, and Scrivener makes it super-simple to move my ideas around until the flow works. That's really hard to do in Word or other programs.

Inconvénients :

The process at the end for compiling everything could be a bit easier to understand, but it didn't take me too long to figure out the simple stuff - which was really al I needed.

My Favorite Writing Software

5,0 il y a 4 ans

Commentaires : I use Scrivener all the time and recommend it to everyone I know.

Avantages :

I love the options--I can view my manuscript by chapter (with the individual docs) or as a whole (with the index cards). I can even create a publish-ready file.

Inconvénients :

I've never been able to create a good Scrivener file from an existing Word doc, so once I compile a manuscript and turn it into a Word doc, I can't put it back in Scrivener. Some users might be better at this, though.
