Exceptional value for money

Commentaires : As a user of SolidWorks at work, I wanted a system that I could use at home with similar capabilities; SolidWorks did not offer a suitable license for this purpose. I discovered Alibre around 2013 and was surprised to find that it closely matched the performance of SolidWorks at an affordable cost, and even more surprised to find that it ran well on my home computer. I used it for parallel work to my day job, for exporting Alibre models into SolidWorks, and for other work on my own account. When I retired in 2019 and set up a small home business, I added a CAM add-in and used Alibre to model products and generate toolpaths for their production on a small CNC machine in my garage; it has paid for itself many times over.

Avantages :

Having used SolidWorks at work since 2000, I have found Alibre to be capable of virtually the same performance at home at a small fraction of the cost. - In addition, it runs well on my basic home desktop PC, and it can import SW native files (though without retaining the feature tree). For someone who is comfortable working in SolidWorks, ProE, etc, Alibre is very much the same at lower cost. - The Alibre license is permanent, unlike other CAD systems. You can subscribe to maintenance support, but if you decide to let that lapse your system license is still good - you lose the maintenance but still can continue to use the software. - Alibre's customer service has also been consistently very good, every question receives careful attention and an immediate helpful response.

Inconvénients :

This is not really Alibre's fault, but the discontinuation of a CAM add-in called AlibreCAM 2020 (as I understand, this was not actually an Alibre product but made by MecSoft) around 2021 was unfortunate - it was excellent and seamless in Alibre and critical to my work. In order to retain this discontinued product, I have not updated my system to the most recent version of Alibre.

Ease of use

Commentaires : There are a few 2D sketching functions I'd like, but have always found a way to do what I needed.

Avantages :

I moved from TurboCAD 2D and had a very little Solidworks experience, the switch was very easy, Alibre is intuitive, after a couple of easily available tutorials I was making useful 3D models and drawings.

Inconvénients :

That I haven't had the time to learn all of Alibre's functions.

Not Even For Free

Commentaires : Spent four hours trying to do a 15 minute OpenSCAD job.

Avantages :

It's free. The price. Forty characters for "free".

Inconvénients :

The UI is slow, heavy, convoluted and "sticky". The draft-based editing is clumsy, limited, and assigns correlations and confinements seemingly at random. Parametric entry is borderline impossible; there are four or five types of lines and whichever one you're defining a shape with is the wrong one. Any promise of defining complicated shapes depends on whether or not you are the giving the sales pitch.

Alibre Design Expert

Commentaires : I am now going on my 3rd year using this software. The technical support is fast and responsive. Each year I receive updates, and many times, during periods of travel between states, my floating license was very convenient, allowing me to set up my workstation on location. Great product, great company.

Avantages :

This is quality CAD software at a very affordable price. I have used Solidworks, AutoCAD, ProEngeer. I have been able to do virtually everything I did with those packages at a fraction of the cost. Best investment for a small engineering consulting company.

Alibre Design Expert Why I use Alibre

Commentaires : Very positive. I had no idea how to work with 3D CAD twelve years ago and now I have designed a patent pending suspension modification. Your payment plan back then convinced me to use Alibre as I had no idea whether investing $3500 would help my crane business then I took a chance with Alibre buying lesser modules on time then finally upgrading to Expert. Keep that in mind its a plus for anyone considering the alternates.

Avantages :

Alibre support was always there guiding me through my early learning stages. Their initial training modules (twelve years ago) were most helpful. Today they have an excellent presenter guiding newcomers through the important steps. He has a wonderful soft voice and positive demeanor that shine through his explanations making the complex simple.

Inconvénients :

Its struggles with Geomajic and their ownership. These are past now but unfortunately too much was lost. As an example NYC CNC [sensitive content hidden] used to recommend Alibre as their go to CAD program but switched to Fusion 360 where they are today. Fusion 360 compares themselves to Solid Works successfully in their comparison but I do not know where Alibre stands in this comparison. That would be helpful. From what I now know about Alibre you are close to both and most importantly closing the gap. Your ownership model is very relevant for professional users but you need to exploit it better. FEA and motion analysis from Simwise could be a plus in this competition if it were available on a favorable monthly payment plan with training support.

Alibre Design just works....very well.

Commentaires : I've been using Alibre for 20 years and it's the CAD package I always return too, having had experience with many others more than double the cost.

Avantages :

I was an avid SolidWorks user and the shift from SolidWorks to Alibre was a short learning curve. It has many of the same features as Solidworks at a competitive price. I like that the license is perpetual unlike the subscription base that other providers are moving to (please don't take that away). Assemblies and mating has come a long way since I first started using. Assemblies are now easy to accomplish. I like that there are frequent updates from Alibre that are always adding features and enhancements. I look forward to receiving the next update announcement.

Inconvénients :

It still has some features missing that I was used to in Solidworks but seems to be catching up fast. It has a couple of bugs that I have reported to Alibre and support seems to be very good and quite responsive.

Easy to learn CAD software at a reasonable price.

Avantages :

Although it has it's share of idiosyncrasies, Alibre proves itself to be a good solidworks alternative for individuals and small businesses. The price of Alibre Atom and Design Pro makes them attainable to home users, Atom especially which is quite a powerful CAD application in it's own right, given it's low price. Overall I am generally designing objects for 3D print, and Alibre gives me the tools I need in an easy to learn package. I often use it alongside Blender and ZBrush, when I need certain components to be accurately modelled or made in a parametric manner.

Inconvénients :

Alibre is a bit lacking in surface modeling tools, making it harder to model complex curved or organic surfaces. Sometimes there are also basic tools you expect to be there, and they don't exist. For example scaling a sketch requires a workaround of extruding the sketch, scaling the entire object, projecting the sketch, suppressing the rescale and extrude, then going into sketch edit and moving the sketch back into position using a somewhat cumbersome move tool.

Alibre Design

Commentaires : Absolutely love it.

Avantages :

Love the cost for deployment and ease of use. Feature rich. Really is a hidden gem in the 3D modeling world. More people need to see how well it works. I use it for everything from generating models for rendering in Keyshot for customers to review to large assembly models/drawings for manufacturing.

Inconvénients :

I don't have anything that really bugs me about the software, small refinements are really all that is needed.

Great affordable software

Avantages :

Alibre is a very powerful 3D drafting software that handles simple to complex parts and assemblies well. Performs like a much more costly piece of software.

Inconvénients :

The 2D drafting is a little lacking, but workable. Creating a drawing is easy, but customizing it can be clunky.

Alibre Design: Great partner for the one man band

Commentaires : Communication with both suppliers and end users of our products has improved immensely. Alibre Design is a wizz for producing 3D printer files quickly and for making big and small changes to designs very rapidly.

Avantages :

Excellent on-line tutorials a great help when starting out. Moving over from an antiquated 2D draughting package was nowhere near as painful as anticipated. I love the way I can insert 3D shaded views into manufacturing drawings. I do not get any calls from suppliers unable to interpret our drawings. It is so quick to use I will produce workshop sketches in Alibre rather than use a notepad and pencil. I'm proud of the drawings I present to customers. Although I do keep the software updated yearly, it is very comforting to know that if I'm forced to stop paying, Alibre Design will not stop working, thus your licensing model works very well and is fair.

Inconvénients :

Nothing really, but there are lots of features I've yet to explore. Some operations slow down, like if there are a lot of holes being edited for example. It is probably due to the spec of the hardware rather than the software.

Alibre Design is the best CAD solution for me

Avantages :

As a solo young Independent Industrial Design, Design Engineering & CGI Contractor, working with many softwares in their pipeline including Mechanical CAD, Simulation, 2D Raster/Vector/Publishing, Mesh CAD DCCs, Animation and Visualisation tools, the costs can ramp up very quickly. To add to that, very few today offer perpetual licenses which is better as with Saas the data, software and access is controlled by company whose pricing, policies can change anytime. Alibre Design for me was a Professional MCAD software with amazing feature sets, very generous pricing and very flexible and pocket friendly upgrade options. Using Alibre, I am no more anxious about missing maintenance and paying huge costs or upfront overpriced licensing fee which is not solo contractor friendly. The modelling tools are great, the features match upto competitor mid-tier MCAD with 3x the price. The best part is the Company, their philosophy, being customer centric and the amazing community around this amazing tool. I could not have wished for anything else and I am very positive my relationship with Alibre Design is going to be very long term.

Inconvénients :

I feel the high tier surfacing for Industrial/Product Design use cases can be improved and I am positive the team is working on better surfacing capabilites.

Alibre represents a great "bang for the buck".

Commentaires : After using IronCAD, Alibre, and Solidworks (for my previous employer) for many years, I had to pick only one to use for my business. I sampled the latest IronCAD (Triball is amazing!), Autodesk's Fusion 360 (requires annual subscription), and Alibre before choosing Alibre Expert. I may have chosen otherwise if cost was no object but I don't design things every day and paying many thousands of dollars for a program just didn't make sense. Overall, I am glad I have Alibre. If you already know Solidworks, Alibre will be very easy to learn.

Avantages :

Alibre is very easy to use, and technical help is always readily available, whether within the users' forum or directly from Alibre. I use Alibre Expert which is reasonably priced, and you do not have to purchase the maintenance package. The latest version includes text embossment and engraving wrap which really comes in handy for some of my products.

Inconvénients :

Of course, there are features in Solidworks that are not yet available in Alibre but then again, a Solidworks license is far more expensive.

Long time Alibre user

Commentaires : It has been a good relationship, but Alibre isn't keeping up with the competition.

Avantages :

I started on Alibre when it was free. This was so long ago, our office still had dialup modems. I parked in a hotel parking lot and used their internet to download my first copy. It has reasonable capability compared with other similar tools.

Inconvénients :

The cost is starting to exceed the capability compared to other similar products like SolidWorks. We will likely switch at the beginning of our next big project.

Excellent product

Commentaires : We have found quite a few uses for the product. We have modelled control cabinets, 3d pdf and present to our customer. It works excellent in this respect. It is great for laying out a panel, or in house machined part. You can model the physical design with confidence. It also works excellent for collaboration with customers. It is also very favorable with 3d printing.

Avantages :

It was difficult at first. We initially purchased in 2004. Performance has improved dramatically since it inception. The geomagic move almost drove us away. After geomagic, it appears that Alibre found its home as a good player in the 3d modelling and cad realm.

Inconvénients :

I still have a few issues with sketching, not really as intuitive as I would like. It has also improved quite well. Works fine on MACOS using parallels.

Alibre is an Exceptional Product

Commentaires : I create complex environmental testing machines and fixtures for a variety of industries (auto, medical, instrumental, etc) as well as developing products for consumers. Alibre accomplishes those tasks with ease and enjoyment.

Avantages :

Very easy and intuitive to use. Seamless design process from concept to completed drawings.

Inconvénients :

At one point Alibre Expert came bundled with M-files, Engineering Toolbox, Structural Analysis Software, and a few other helpful items. Sadly, those products are no longer included or supported. I continue to use M-files and could not function easily without it. However, I have not been able to upgrade or get support for it.

Long time satisfied user

Commentaires : We have used Alibre since 2012, and along with additive manufacturing it has enhanced and enabled our engineers and designers abilities to create, communicate ideas, and model more complex products and subsystems. Back in the day the initial learning curve to design in 3D was steep, coming from a 2D environment, but it was hugely worthwhile.

Avantages :

All needed functionality for moderately complex modelling and design provided at a price point that allows use widely throughout the company. We also appreciate the steadily increasing functionality with each new version.

Inconvénients :

Little to complain about. Very occasional crashes and hangs like most cad software. Some advanced features not available.

Best Software for the Money

Avantages :

So many things to like it would be difficult to list them all. I've used various other parametric modeling software over the last 40 years, and for the industries I work with, Alibreprovides me wtih all the tools I need to run a successful design business.

Inconvénients :

That's even more difficult for me to answer that what do I like the most. There is nothing in this design software that makes me cringe, even a little.
