Avantages :

The ease of using and GUI is so user friendly that a person with minimum knowledge can easily deploy and use it.

Inconvénients :

To be honest I, dont see any see any thing as such. Since the team is contiuously working on developing some create features.

Astoundingly Good; Very Affordable

Commentaires : Veeam is the Cadillac of backups, and there are lots of Chevys that will get the job done but really make you work at it, but Altaro sits in the sweet spot of a great value with lots of features. I have deployed it at every client that runs VMs on Windows, and it has saved the day several times. Setup takes about five minutes, especially if you are using an attached target. Even complicated NAS-based backups with off-site copies (another great feature) can be set up in less than 30 minutes for every VM on a server.

Avantages :

The ability to schedule sandbox restores drew me to Altaro, but honestly, the few times that I have needed Tech Support (including one time on a holiday) it was outstanding. The quality of the support, the speed with which I can reach someone, and the genuine politeness of the staff make getting support painless. I also like the ability to do off-site copies of the backups. This work s great when I use a direct-attached targets like ioSafe drives and then replicate the backups to portable USB drives to go off site.

Inconvénients :

The software is amazingly full featured, but I would like to see the sandbox restore take a snapshot of the services snap-in on the restore once started, shut down the sandbox, delete the restored machine, and send me the image so that I know it worked. The first time you put in the license code it is a bit convoluted. This is nit picking.

Commentaires : to get to the most actual issue: when your backup reaches a certain point and gets too big altaro becomes almost useless. they told me there is no way to improve this situation. when the backup gets too large and you need to do it daily the health check cannot finnish within 24 hours and starts all over again instead of continuing or something. I think i will give Iperius or Uranium a try. This is unbearable. "we are working on version 9 - that one is going to be better" ...
well yes , maybe... but since that one I will have to pay another 1000€ or something like the last time, it is just infuriating... not having a system work anywhere close to fine. Very high maintanence software. needy.

Avantages :

- many functions - relatively easy to use (when it works) - reasonable price - fast and relatively good support

Inconvénients :

I cannot belive how SLOW this thing is. It has been a fight for years to make it run at some acceptable speeds. Painfully SLOW! no matter how good the harware is. It does not use the RAM/CPU/HARDDrives/NETWORK etc. fully. And noone can tell me why. I guess they have some crappy programming that throttels the threads or something. For example: it can do , when it works properly, a backup of like 10VMs with 3-4TB in like half a day. But it cannot finish a health check of the backup in less then 24 hours or resume the next day where it stopped. It starts all over again and never finishes. The drives have a RAID 10 Array and can do 500MB/S. yet the check barely challanges the drives. and then there is the issue with updates: half time I had to do a version update whithin the same big release, I had issues like: the backup got corrupted, or the settings got lost or similar. With help from the support team we could then solve some of the issues but then here we have the next problem: you have to renew the license to have access to support. which is fine BUT - when you renew after your old support has expired, you pay not from the day you buy support but rather from the day your old support expired -> RIPOFF! in my oppinion - they mess up the software with some small update inbetween and then you have to pay to resolve it. - one issue we solved ourselves and found out months later: your RAM on the Server NEEDS to be in DUAL CHANNEL or else Altaro will behave like absolute crap.

VM Backup is a simple/intuitive tool for creating VM Backups.

Avantages :

It did what it was supposed to and backed our servers up to our chosen media each night. Once it was setup, the backups ran very consistently, with little need for adjustment or error correction. We had very few failed backups.

Inconvénients :

Configuration is missing a lot of granular options, making it harder to do things you may want to do with your backups. Configuring backups can be a pain due to this oversimplification.

Altaro - Reliable and great suppot

Commentaires : Altaro is a very reliable backup solution. If and when we have required support, the webchat function within the software is fantastic and the support guys are incredibly helpful

Avantages :

What I like most, is the wizard driven selections. Setting it up is super easy because of this. Even if you haven't used Altaro before, you will be up and running in no time.

Inconvénients :

we have fund previously that if a new version of Altaro is released, it creates a new folder for backups, which takes up more room on the media, as it keeps the previous backups as well as the new.

It really does what it says on the Tin!

Commentaires : The whole experience wrapped up is just - Good!! We had a situation causing us to move away from another backup vendor due to issues (not being able to depend on a backup to simply do its job causes sleepless nights after a while). We installed Altaro VM Backup, configured it - all in 15 minutes, including set-up of the email alerts and left it for the evening. Next day - Emails are usually our first encounter as to what occurred overnight - They were all Green! Seriously - a big wow from us! 7 Virtual Machines all backed up successfully and in a time window that seriously made me look twice. The compression and the speed of backups - wow!

Avantages :

I have a few things I like - but the most nicest thing: The user interface on Altaro product always seems so simple, and logical. Being in IT support, I dread those times when it takes 20 minutes to work out the GUI or interface to try and restore a file or check a backup log.

Inconvénients :

OK - Not being funny - I'll have to come back to this question, because I struggle to think of something I really don't like right now.

It just makes life easier

Commentaires : It just makes life much easier and gives us confidence in backup storage.

Avantages :

It's very easy to use and to recover data. Installation is straightforward as is the updating process. A key feature is the almost instant access to support via in app chat sessions.

Inconvénients :

Integration with RMM platforms could be better by making specific packages for the products.

Fantastic Solution

Avantages :

I find Altaro VM Backup to be very reliable and we have never experienced any issues restoring backups. The software works as good as close competitors that charge double the price.

Inconvénients :

Would be good to have an option to backup directly to the cloud instead of an on-Prem server. Other than that, works great for our business needs.

Set it and forget it

Commentaires : I backup 1 host with 5 virtual machines on it nightly.

Avantages :

I like that it runs my backups nightly and only notifies me when there has been an issue.

Inconvénients :

For a novice with virtual machines like myself, it can be a bit overwhelming initially. I know it is designed with people with far more expertise than myself in mind.

Avantages :

- Easy to deploy and manage, the CMC (Cloud Management Console) is really fantastic and hard to beat. - Can initiate backups and restores from cloud, and get robust and detailed history/info on usage metrics as well as standard history logs for daily backup activity (ability to filter down on specific clients is another big plus). - Boot from backup is also amazing, cant imagine going without it now, makes testing backups fast and easy. - Really impressive compression and deduplication Fair per-VM pricing is what sold us - easy flat model for our customers to understand

Inconvénients :

Occasional errors in backups (these generally correct on their own though, self healing backup chain), not FIPS compliant unfortunately

Altaro VM Backup

Commentaires : We have reduced the average time of recovery for a failed server. Clients appreciate that we can recover their business servers within a few hours instead of a few days.
We have been using Altaro VM Backup since v. 4 I think. I was impressed with the early version and have specified Altaro VM Backup as our standard for Virtual Machine environments.
The addition of the Cloud Management Console and integration with ConnectWise is a big plus.

Avantages :

Setup and configuration is fairly quick. Restore options allow for a granular file level from a VM image backup. Ability to restore to different host. Ability to copy an Offsite backup to remote location. Support for Cloud storage sites for off site backup storage. Speed of recovery time on a failed host. Able to restore a VM to new host within a couple hours. Compression and de-duplication saves storage space on backup media. Product support is excellent. Usually able to solve errors within the Support Chat. Support is always ready to answer even the simplest question to help us out.

Inconvénients :

The local management console is not password protected. Limited explanation of error messages in the software. Setting up network connections to NAS storage can sometimes fail with cryptic error message.

Gives me a lot of value for my money

Commentaires : I've been very pleased with Altaro VM Backup for my VMware ESXI network. Other backup packages were either way too simple or way too expensive and too complicated. I'm not primarily a network administrator, I'm a software engineer, so I don't want to have to understand all the intricacies of complex backups. I just want to be able to set up a reliable backup that happens in an automated way and notifies me in a clear fashion if the backup completes and warns me if it doesn't complete. Altaro hit all the right balance of those features for our small company.

Avantages :

The price is great for a small business that needs decent backup software with a good feature set. The interface is easy to use even if creating backups is not your primary job. The daily notifications are great and summarize what's happened to make it easy to see if anything needs your attention without devoting a lot of time to reading the email.

Inconvénients :

Needs occasional hand-holding. For a couple reasons the backups will fail once or twice a quarter. Sometimes it's due to needing to reauthenticate with my offsite storage on a Synology array but other times it's because the Altaro services stop working on the backup server so I have to stop and restart them.

Been customer for 7 years and quite happy

Avantages :

Started using the product in 2015 with basic windows server 2008 Hyper-V back-up for free trial and was quite surprised about quality and functionality. Since then been using in various environments (1000+ VMs) and amount of progress from old versions to the new is significant. I could see how much effort and expertise goes into the product and how it is trying to be on the cutting edge of backup technology.

Inconvénients :

The upgrade process from old to new version is not as seamless as I wanted it to be, especially with licence.

Altaro Backup - The Only Way to Go

Commentaires : We are a small IT services company and we use it to backup all of our clients servers. It has come to the rescue on several occasions. From a "borked" Windows server upgrade to an partially encrypted server we have been able to restore the clients server/data with little or no loss of data. It makes us look like heroes. We have tried other solutions and none give us the all the features that Altaro has at a reasonable cost.

Avantages :

- the ability to boot from backup is a life saver. On more that one occasion we have had to boot from backup after the clients onsite IT accidently "borked" their SQL server. With boot from backup the client was able to continue working while the software completed the restore of the VM in the background. - offsite backup allows us to store the nightly backups from our clients at on offsite location, with this feature we no longer have to pickup and return drives on a daily basis to our client locations. Not only do we save time, but we are able to charge for the service and save our clients money on the costs of a daily hard drive rotation.

Inconvénients :

- trivial, but it would save a step if when upgrading the software it would uninstall the old software for you. Currently you have to remember to manually uninstall it first then install the new release

Avantages :

The main positive is support, it is amazingly quick and the agents are helpful. The speed and data compression is also very good.

Inconvénients :

Very limited for physical server backups. Its essentially a P2V but still works.

Great VM Backup Software

Commentaires : We are backing up Hyper-V and VMWare VMs and the overall experience has been fantastic. We had virtual Exchange Servers that needed individual message restores, and this software was able to handle granular restores as well as the entire VM backup. Love this product!!

Avantages :

The ability to back up both Hyper-V and VMWare VMs under one application, with options for scheduled offsite backups and the option to run scheduled tests for past backups.

Inconvénients :

Sometimes the error messages can be hard to decipher, although I did not take care of the available support options.

Affordable and easy to use backup solution with outstanding performance and stellar support!

Commentaires : So far Altaro has helped us to perfectly protect our large growing VM population (500+ VMs) with ease.
The overall performance is more than impressing and the deduplication/compression is outstanding.
Last but not least the fair pricing and the simplicity of the licensing model is very much appreciated.

Avantages :

Inconvénients :

Major version updates often introduce not only new features (...), however so far the support team was always able to help out quickly. Some optimizations could be made to ease the management of large VM populations (500+) Default settings should be customizable throughout (e.g. Schedules, Retention Policies)

Fantastic Piece of Software

Commentaires : We are using altaro on every customer site with different storages (QNAP, Synology, Windows Servers) and never had any serious problems. Offsite directly to Azure works like a charm! The guys and girls from the support team are lightning fast with response and can help you in minutes. We love it!

Avantages :

Super easy to setup! super easy to use! rock solid software with outstanding support. This is by far one of the best backup&recovery products since years.

Inconvénients :

I tried my best to find something to dislike but we've never had any serious problems or flaws with the software.

Inconvénients :

For high complex Systems its not the best suited since it does not has the most options. Deleting/purging older backups is painstaiking slow and needs to be improved.

Reliable and well supported

Commentaires : Reliable product that we have used to recover data within expected timeframes and under pressure. Always test your restore functionality to make sure it works... and this one does.

Avantages :

Restoring VM's and also Microsoft 365 Data is granular and easy. The single dashboard for both products makes it easy for our engineers to use.

It would be nice to have more detail regarding current and past operations

Avantages :

I never thought that i'll be able to have a backup up and running in under 15 minutes. The GUI is neat and tidy and self-explanatory in most parts that it is very satisfying working with Altaro VM Backup. It doesn't take much to convince customers into choosing Altaro - most of the time a trial is more than sufficient. There's just so much Altaro has to offer - sandbox restores, boot from backup even replication and offsite storage ...

Inconvénients :

The only, minor thing i'd have on my wishlist would be better reporting capabilities like: "storage used per VM backup", "Error reports" etc.
